Voters Should Get the Government They Vote For

Opinion Piece by Iain Evans

It is unbelievable that in South Australia, one of the world’s best democracies, we are debating whether the party that wins the majority of the state wide two-party preferred vote should form government.

But in South Australia in 2010 this is the question that people are asking- ‘Should the party that wins the majority of the state wide two-party preferred vote form government?’

Our Litter Laws are Rubbish!

Opinion Piece by Iain Evans

The State’s litter laws are rubbish.

While South Australia has traditionally had lower levels of litter than any other State because our Container Deposit Legislation has been so successful- we still have significant amounts of litter.

Value Community Service

Opinion Piece by Iain Evans

At this time of the year Community Service Clubs all around South Australia are holding Hand Over Dinners. The outgoing President of the club hands over control of the club to the new President. This tradition in clubs like Apex, Lions, Rotary, Zonta and Soroptimist provides the opportunity for clubs to showcase their service to the community that year.

Major Peter Badcoe

Opinion Piece by Iain Evans

The late Major Peter Badcoe was the last South Australian to be awarded the Victoria Cross, our nation’s highest wartime honour for valour in the face of the enemy.

That medal and Peter Badcoe’s personal collection are today at risk of being lost overseas if we don’t act quickly.

Major Badcoe was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross in in 1967.  He was a war hero... a boy from suburban Malvern who was schooled at the Adelaide Technical College and, as a man, made the ultimate sacrifice.

.......and Pigs Might Fly!

Opinion Piece by Iain Evans

Kevin Rudd’s proposed takeover of our hospitals on the promise of better health outcomes is bad news for South Australian’s. It reminds me of the Whitlam takeover of the railways on the promises of a better transport outcome - and hasn’t South Australia benefited from that decision!

Rudd suggests that Labor in Canberra can run South Australian hospitals better than Labor in South Australian and indeed Labor in every State – based on what evidence?

Why Mine Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary?

Opinion Piece by Iain Evans

Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary is under threat from a proposed uranium mine.

The winner of the 2005 and 2006 South Australian Tourism Awards and the 2006 award for Sustainable Tourism is now a possible uranium mine, despite its heritage listing.

The Rann Labor Government has issued mining exploration licenses to Marathon Resources so they can drill for uranium with a view to establishing a uranium mine within the Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary.

Down the Road to More Industrial Disputes

An Opinion Piece by Iain Evans MP

THE call by the Australian business sector for one national industrial relations system sounds great - until you stop and think about it. The business sector is awaiting the new dawn on July 1, when the Federal Government gains a majority in the Senate and hence control of the Parliament. The Government has no excuse for not delivering what business wants. There will be no blocking Senate for it to blame.

That's why the business sector is out of the blocks early calling for a single industrial relations system.
