Mid-year budget review: Christmas pain for SA families

More debt, more deficits, high cost of living.

South Australians face a bleak Christmas this year with Labor's Mid-Year Budget Review delivering more pain for families.

Under Premier Weatherill's leadership, cost of living pressures continue to soar with state debt estimated to reach a near 20-year high of over $11 billion.

Today's Mid-Year Budget Review revealed:

- Debt is increasing to over $11 billion

- Labor will be running five deficits in six years, meaning that in five out of six years the State Labor Government is spending more than it is earning

- South Australia's net financial liabilities to revenue ratio is now at 133 per cent, placing further pressure on the AAA credit rating if savings are not met

- Total liabilities are expected to reach around $23 billion

Treasurer is not on the money!

Treasurer Snelling has got it wrong yet again - this time incorrectly claiming that the main ratio that determines our credit rating is the "non-financial public sector to revenue ratio".

It is in fact "net financial liabilities to revenue".

The Treasurer's own budget papers show this ratio is well over the 80-90 per cent level that ratings agencies are comfortable with.

It is currently sitting at 114.6 per cent climbing to 116.7 per cent in 2014, not "just over 90 per cent" as claimed by Treasurer Snelling on ABC radio on November 16.

Rann & Foley leave billions in debt, deficit and liability

Far from rebuilding the state’s economy and finances, the State Labor Government’s own figures show that Mr Rann and Mr Foley will leave Premier Weatherill with $10.3 billion state debt by 2015, a state liability of $20 billion by 2013 and a budget deficit of $263 million.

Sex Offenders to Register Emails with Police

Under a Private Member’s Bill introduced by Member for Davenport , Iain Evans, and passed today by Parliament, convicted sex offenders will have to register all email addresses, Facebook memberships and other internet usage, like passwords, with police.

Already under the Sexual Offenders Act convicted sex offenders have to register their name, address, employment details and other information with authorities.

‘But we are going one step further,’ Mr Evans said.

‘Sex offenders are now moving to new technologies and new forums to find their victims.’

They have been known to use social internet sites such as Facebook and My Space that are popular among young people, to identify and familiarise with their victims, putting children at risk even in their own home.

Iain Evans' Moves to Introduce Bushfire Committee

Over recent years South Australia has suffered many fires, as have other parts of Australia- Victoria being the most recent tragic example.

“We need to take decisive steps to best prepare South Australians for future bushfire events,” Mr Evans said.

Mr Evans has proposed a Standing Committee of the Parliament focussed on bushfire safety and prevention. The focus of the Committee would be on the very complex issues surrounding bushfire safety and prevention, including issues such as planning, native vegetation, building design, education, legislation and public preparedness.
